John Looney, MD is a Board-Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Avance Psychiatry in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Dr. Looney attended Cornell University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned his Biomedical Sciences (BMS) degree from Dartmouth Medical School and then went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Looney also gained experience in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Looney has extensive experience treating children, adolescents, and college students. He practiced medicine in the United States Navy and at a prestigious private psychiatric center in Texas. He then practiced in this field for over 35 years at Duke Medical Center. While at Duke, he was the director of the Duke Substance Treatment Program for Youth and the Duke Center for Psychiatry and Law.
Dr. Looney accepts patients from age 5 through college age for all problems troubling youth, adolescents, and their families. With older adolescents and college students, he can address drug and alcohol problems. Dr. Looney emphasizes the importance of fully involving families in the assessment and treatment of youth. He believes it is important to work with the schools his patients attend. He works closely with psychotherapists, pediatricians, internists, and other professionals to assist with his patients and their goals.
Dr. Looney and his oldest son run a large cattle ranch on the Cumberland Plateau. He enjoys discussing what it takes to be a good doctor with his two physician sons.
